Kiss Those Strongholds Goodbye! – Motivation Monday

Strongholds. A place that is generally constructed and fortified to protect someone or something against an attack. Something that can be of great benefit. A safe place.

But many times the enemy likes to use our places we have created for safety – against us. He quickly shifts the feeling of safety to a place that escalates to self destruction. It’s not always obvious either. These self-constructed walls and coping mechanisms end up holding us in serious bondage.

It just starts with a glass of wine with some friends to “take the edge off” a long day. Indulging in comfort food when life feels overwhelming. One more feeling of pure bliss to get away from the stress of this world. Flirting with someone despite the promise worn around your ring finger. Even if only for a minute.

And BOOM. Stronghold.

Something we run to find comfort. An escape. To feel again. To feel accepted.

A passage of scripture in Judges 6:1-2 really spoke to me this morning in my devotion time. The Israelites just couldn’t get it right, could they? They were God’s chosen people, yet they constantly found themselves in a mess.

This particular time, they had found themselves in yet another situation and for seven years, The Lord basically handed them over to the Midianites. Their disobedience brought such terrible, oppressive times upon them that they prepared shelters for themselves in the clefts of the mountains, caves and… Ready for it? Strongholds.

How many times do we find shelter in our strongholds?

“That’s just the way I was raised.” “I can’t help it, I’ve always been that way.” “It’s just a guy thing.”

Shelter in our strongholds.

We have created these comfy, cozy places and they quickly become strongholds in our lives. Their chains are heavy and hard to break. They create barbed-wire fences around us keeping us locked inside and others at bay. And so many times we are completely unaware.

So what do we do? I’m so glad you asked.

Bathe that thing in prayer. Seek The Lord with all of your heart and you will find Him {Jeremiah 29:13}. Listen to His still, quiet whisper leading you away from things that could potentially destroy relationships and drive wedges between loved ones. And be brave enough to walk away if He compels you to do so.

There is so much power in the name of Jesus to break every. single. chain. No stronghold stands a chance when face to face with a child of God redeemed by the blood of Jesus! Take your God-given authority over these strongholds!

What strongholds are holding you in bondage today? Rest assured, you CAN overcome through Jesus Christ!
